Just as the IOC began to look to the new Millennium, a local controversy in Salt Lake, quickly turned into a full blown international scandal, often compared in the media the impact of Watergate ,that within a matter of weeks, would very nearly destroy the IOC and collapse the global marketing programmes. With politicians, sponsors and media commentators all piling in, the IOC once again came closer to collapse, than perhaps anyone has realised.

The IOC  embarked on a wholesale structural reform, pressing 30 years of change into 6 months. In the process, the IOC would come through the crisis even stronger, with the Olympic values re-enforced, and partners lining up to resign. A true lesson in crisis management.
